Those Big Screen Monitors are due to go to Dumps.

What do you do with a big screen monitor nowadays when it is no longer functioning?
Dumps, right?
But are they supposed to go there? Dumping ground for them?
Are they dangerous if they leak?
Oops....I forgot, they are vacuum tubes.
Means that it is airless inside.
Then why do they call it harzardess.
Are they really dangerous?
Both inside and out?
Can someone please help as I do have more than ten units to dispose off.

How to fix a Power Supply.

Got an email from a long lost friend asking how to fix a Power Supply?
His Question is.......
My Canon Fax broke down yesterday.
After using it for four years, it finally dies off.
No power lights... nothing at all.
So I fetched my toolbox and finally dismantled out the power supply unit.
Took a look at it and found the fuse shorted black in color.
Replaced the fuse, switched on and it blows again.
What shall I do next?

My answer to him was.......
When you checked the fuse, take a good look at it.
If it is burnt black, there's always some other components shorted as well.
You have to do a throughout check.
If you find the fuse is open but it is colorless or slightly yellowish,
that means you can straight away replace the fuse and test out the machine.
WHY? because the yellowish open fuse dies off due to old age.

Well, when I get a reply from him again, I will let you know the rest of the story.

How To Modify your Focus Control

What to do when your computer monitor display gets more and more BLUR as your monitor warms up? Finally as it gets heated up, you hardly can view the words with your naked eye.
The fault here lies in the Focus Block situated on the flyback transformer.
The other very common fault is when your monitor warms up, the display gets brighter and brighter until you cannot stare at it any more. The brightness blinds up your eyes.
This is also a very common fault in the computer monitor.
Here I develop a video clip to show you how to replace the Focus/Screen Block to your monitor.
In case you do not know anything about Electronics Repairs, it is best left for a specialised technician to do the job for you. You can purchase the Focus Block at your local retailer and engage an experienced technician to finish up the work for you.
If you do come across any problems with this work, please contact me for any advice given.
Help is just an email away.
John.
do enjoy the video clip.

Denon Desoldering Tools

Soldering is an art.
Desoldering is a tactic.
There are many types of desoldering pumps, guns out there in the market.
The most popular ones are made by Wellers, Goots, Metcal, Hakko, Antex, etc...
I have used most types in my workshop.
My best desoldering tool is still the Denon desoldering gun.
As age is catching up, I decided to stop operating my repair workshop.

Here I am offering to sell off my beloved Denon Desoldering gun model SC-7000Z.
It is operated at AC240Volts. You can change the heater element to 110volts depending on your country.

I bought it for USD315 those days.
It is still selling in Howard electronics for USD395.00 excluding shipping.

Make an offer if you are interested to buy.

Other interesting equipments I have for sale.

Arise Monitor with No Power

What do you get out of an Arise Monitor with no power.
Scrap it or use it for future spare parts or repair it for as a spare set.
Well, I was thinking of stripping it apart. Dump the picture tube away.
Keep all the parts as spares components.
Then when I think of all the time involved in doing so, I might as well try to repair it.
OK....
Opened up the back cover and given it a quick look at the board.
Looks very clean inside.
So I decided to take out my multimeter as usual.
Firstly I will check if there's still any remaining voltages at the reservoir capacitor in the power supply as I do not want to get a nasty shock.
Good...2volts dc only.
Inspected the fuse, looks good but I did test it with my faithful fluke multimeter.
There's continuity....means it is still good.
Then measured the primary windings of the switch mode power supply transformer with the Dicksmith meter.
All leds lighted.
Good.... no shorts in the secondary side.
Then I go straight to the flyback transformer.
Also measured the primary windings with the Dicksmith meter.
This time there's only 2 leds lighted.
This shows there's a shorted component or components at the secondary side.
Next, I used my Fluke multimeter and tested the horizontal transistor.
Found it shorted on all 3 pins.
Desoldered it out and tested it again.
Sure enough it shows all rounds shorted.
Replaced with a new transistor restored the display.

Repairing CRT monitors is a dying Trade

How long do you think CRT monitors will be around?
Most of the users of crt monitors will not repair their sets once they break down.
They prefer to pay more to own an lcd monitor.
Then as time goes by, there will be no more crt monitors around.
LCDs will then take its place in the market.
What will happen to the repairers of today?
If they are young, they can learn a new trade.
They can learn to repair lcd monitors.
What about the older ones?
Is it too old to learn or is it too difficult to learn?
There's a saying...... it's never too old to learn.
But then the learning curve it too stiff.
Can an old man remembers what he learns?
What do you think?
